onomatopoeia of the day : peter-peter-peter

..

....the tufted titmouse ( Parus bicolor) is the best known, ranging widely over the eastern United States, where its cheery whistled "peter-peter-peter" rings through decidous woodlands, orchards, and suburbs.

(ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA ONLINE,2012)

But also in Europe "peter peter" can be heard :

1874. C.M. Yonge, Lady Hester ii,28 : The tomtits were calling 'peter' in the trees

1892  - Old Woman's Outlook ii,37   :  Sunshine, setting the thrushes and robins to sing, and the
           ox-eyes*  to cry Peter

(THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY, Volume XI   OW-POISANT
prepared by J.A. Simpson and E.S.C. Weiner, Oxford 1989)

* ox-eye : apparently both the Great Tit (Parus major) as the Blue Tit (Parus caeruleus) can be
               called this way
